First Day Out

Foal just born at Elk Creek Ranch summer camp

April, when the Fates favor us, offers a wonderful snapshot of newborn horses and just how quickly they get their legs underneath them. Summit was born exactly one week ago and appeared the helpless innocent we would expect. One week later, we put Shy Anne, her mother, and Summit out, and watched the magic.

Foals first day on green grass

At first Summit had just a few questions:  Where are my stall and straw?

 What is this green stuff?

What are legs and what do I do with them?

In the meantime Shy Anne took a moment to enjoy a good roll in the grass, and Summit stopped her leg explorations to check out this strange behavior and make sure Mom was okay.

Then she dropped the hammer… one week after her mother brought her into the world!

Not a bad Mother’s Day offering!
