A Touch of History

Rattlesnake Ranger Station

The Cody Enterprise recently published the Frank Sparhawk photo and letter. I'm asking all former Elk Creekers to take a few minutes to look at the photo and, without looking down, try to place it. The cabin was a stopover for people going to and from Cody and a shelter if the weather was bad, not that it is ever bad up there.  (See below!)

Mooncrest Peak

The historical photo is looking to the North and this photo to the South toward the headwaters of the creek and Mooncrest Peak. The site of the cabin was just upstream from these horses. The cabin was burned when the Wilderness Act was passed.

First Elk Camp

The history of the building is interesting. Before the Sunlight Road was built, the shortest route from Cody was northwest though the First Elk Camp to Dead Indian Creek while today the road goes north 20 miles and the Chief Joseph Highway goes 20 miles to the west to the Dead Indian crossing.

Nighttime Snow

2023 brought some nighttime snow to First Elk Camp but hearty spirits, human and equine, prevailed.
