Pond Dwellers, Briefly
Winter Moose Visitors
Every winter, as the snow settles deep into Sunlight Valley, a lone moose or a cow and calf make their way to Elk Creek Ranch. Their visit is brief but purposeful—the pond provides an easy source of water and a feast of aquatic plants even in the depths of winter. These massive yet graceful creatures roam the valley, finding respite in the quiet of the season before moving on.
Foraging in the Winter Wonderland
Low-hanging aspen and cottonwood branches offer a welcome addition to their winter diet. As snow covers the valley floor, moose must reach for whatever sustenance they can find. Their towering height gives them an advantage over other wildlife, allowing them to browse on twigs and bark while waiting for spring’s thaw.
Nap Time in the Snow
After a long morning of foraging and wading through icy waters, there’s nothing better than a mid-day nap in a snowbank. Moose are well-insulated for extreme winter temperatures, their thick fur trapping warmth even in subzero conditions. With the sun casting long shadows through the trees, they take time to rest before continuing their journey through the valley.
Summer at the Pond: A Different Kind of Wildlife
Fast forward a few months, and the same pond transforms into a lively gathering place—not for moose, but for ranchers eager to cool off from the summer heat. As the warm sun beats down on Sunlight Valley, campers take to the pond for a refreshing dip, laughter echoing through the trees. The moose, perhaps sensing the change, stay away, preferring their quiet mountain retreats to the playful chaos of summer camp.
