Stormy Weather

Snow and clouds over Sunlight Basin, Wyoming — home of Elk Creek Ranch Summer Camp

Mother Nature Pays a Visit

Mother Nature paid Sunlight Valley a memorable visit of perhaps in ski mountain lingo, a massive dump. When all was said and done, we got two and a half to three feet of snow. But it brought beauty with it.

Fresh snow in the foothills between Cody, WY and Elk Creek Ranch Summer Camp

Chief Joseph Scenic Highway

The road from Cody to Sunlight climbs from 5000 feet where it is rare to see serious snow, but the foothills were covered in a wonderful foot-deep blanket of snow.

A White Dinner Jacket

At the ranch the snow was much deeper creating in some cases an almost comical scene: the John Deere tractor in a white dinner jacket.

Braving the Cold & Snow

For the horses, it was anything but comical.  The coldest temp was -21 degrees and for three days the temperature never reached 0 degrees. We fed the horses down in the little valley Elk Creek has carved in the landscape. The horses were out of the wind and we upped their hay considerably, but we were able to beat our retreat to a warm cabins while the horses hunkered down through the night.

Meet Bubba

Only Bubba, a part Norwegian Elk Hound, appreciated the cold and the deep snow. He put his head down and, at a run, plowed through the snow. And then did it again. . . and again. He seemed to wonder why his human companion was not joining him.

Summer Beckons

It is fun to think that the Elk Creek ranchers in a few months will be cooling off in the pond.
